2024 Q1 Volunteer
Jorge Peralta, Associate Archaeologist, Volunteers with The Archeological Conservancy.
The Archaeological Conservancy is the only national, nonprofit organization that identifies, acquires, and preserves the most significant archaeological sites in the United States. Pax Associate Archeologist Jorge Peralta was chosen as Pax’s quarter one employee volunteer and chose The Archeological Conservancy to partner with. Here is what he has to say about the non-profit and his experience volunteering:
“Next to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve in Lancaster, CA lies Fairmont Buttes, a significant archaeological site rich in indigenous history that spans thousands of years. This site provides evidence of large-scale migration and trade networks that extend all the way to the Channel Islands. Fairmont Buttes is located on property owned by The Archaeological Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and stabilizing archaeological sites by acquiring the surrounding land.
While attending community college, I had many opportunities to visit Fairmont Buttes to explore the site. We discovered Bedrock Mortars, biface tools, and thousands of flakes scattered throughout the area. One of the most concerning observations was the significant amount of trash that littered the site. Unfortunately, people began using the site as a dumping ground, causing damage to the landscape and disturbing the historical and cultural significance of the area.
On March 23, 2024, I volunteered on behalf of the Archeological Conservancy to help remove trash and restore Fairmont Buttes. Following the familiar trail from my previous visits, I was pleased to see that although there was still trash present, there was a noticeable improvement in the cleanliness of the area. Equipped with tools and gloves, I began the painstaking task of collecting and removing the litter that had accumulated over time. Bag after bag, I tirelessly worked to clear the parts of the site that I remembered exploring during my visits. I was able to locate the same Bedrock Mortars I had seen before and devoted myself to cleaning the area surrounding them.
Overall, my experience at Fairmont Buttes was not only a rewarding personal endeavor but also a small contribution to the preservation of this important archaeological site. By taking the initiative to clean up the area, I hope to inspire others to respect and protect our shared history and natural environment for future generations to appreciate.”
