Pax Archeologists gathered at the Southern California Archaeology (SCA) Conference in Riverside this past March to attend symposia on maritime archaeology, landscape studies for land management, and Indigenous archaeology. Aside from advancing their knowledge in CRM, Pax teammates competed and took first place in the SCA’s Ethics Bowl and presented thesis research!
Pax also hosted a booth in the bookroom and made lasting connections with fellow archaeologists and participated in both the silent auction and awards banquet.
Pax Archaeologists won first place in the SCA's Ethics Bowl!! They discussed the ethical and legal pathways faced by archaeologists and ran scenarios that took place in both Academic and CRM settings. We are extremely proud of our team for winning this year’s competition and look forward to continuing the discourse on ethical archaeology.
Pax Associate Archaeologist Sarah Bertman presented her thesis research in an organized symposium that utilized orphaned collections at Antelope Valley College. Her paper, "Geochemical Sourcing of Rhyolite Artifacts from the Antelope Valley: A Cultural Biography," examined the trade and exchange of rhyolite through sourcing to understand the cultural dynamics of social spheres of local groups in the western Mojave Desert. She received written approval for her research from the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians (FTBMI) and the Tejon Indian Tribe; her work is part of a greater effort to support “sustainable” archaeological efforts through collaborative-based research.
Keep an eye out for Pax at the 2025 SCA Conference - we can’t wait!
